Revival of the Fittest...

I'm about to leave for the Sept/Oct Revival tour on Thursday night. I always get the jitters before we leave for a tour after a long time off. It used to not bother me when we toured ever waking second of the year, because it was normal. Now, I have a home and a dog and I see my friends and it's weird to have to pack up and leave all the time. I know now why most people can't make it in a band, it's not for lack of talent, it's because not a lot of people can tough out the touring that it takes to survive and keep your band in the public eye. It takes a desire beyond the norm to do this kind of thing all the time. You have to have an unending desire to share art. That's what this is about. It's easier when you have nothing, but it's also harder to have nothing.

Tomorrow I get to go see PJ20 in the theatre, one night only. So awesome. Lord willing, I'll be writing songs on the Revival Tour and we should start getting together and rehearsing and making demos when I get back. I'm fixated on the Pearl Jam songs "Go, Animal, and The Fixer."
I certainly hope I can rope some of that vibe into our new songs. I'd like to have a record that had that kind of ferocity. I'm also currently obsessed with the Foo Fighters songs "One by One, the Pretender, and Times Like These." That would be six songs to a fantastic half of a record.

I know one thing, we're looking into how to carry on our sound, how to stay exciting, how to improve, how not to loose the intensity because we're older. I feel like we have more to prove now than when we first put out Sink or Swim. We've been given a gift, now we have to deserve it.

Stay Hungry, Stay Inspired. Here comes the future.
- Be good.
Brian

  1. Animal combined with the Gaslight sound and Your stories? Where can I pre-order?

Also, it sucks not to have Revival tour anywhere near Northern Europe - we need rock n roll here in Finland, too - but at least they show PJ20 here tonight.

And how about that new Chuck Ragan album, the man should be a super star, right?

  5. I miss being on the road and sleeping in the van. The junk food, endless cups of coffee, the people you meet and the things you see. I think it's something you either love or hate. Happy travels!

  6. I hope you have a great time touring! Thank you for this post. Elsie is one of the greatest and most inspirational albums I've heard. I'm glad I had the chance to discover Elsie and The Gaslight Anthem records in my small greek city. Good luck!

So well-put. Sometimes I need remarks like this to serve as reminders to why I do what I do, and why I want it so badly. And I why I just love rock and roll.
Good luck on the tour and getting some new material rollin, chief.

  9. Thank you for writing "Go Tell Everybody." I'm currently obsessed with it.

I rediscovered Pearl Jam again last year. Their newer album Backspacer isn't bad, a little slower. "Just Breathe" and "The End" were my favorites.

Good luck on tour. See you when you come thru Virginia.

  11. Hey! I wanted to step in just to let you know how amazing you (and your band) are to me.. Maybe you'll read.. You are a true inspiration, my first real hero. Wish you all the best for the Revival Tour and I hope you'll come again in Italy, maybe next year.. I'll definitely be there again, front row, singing my lungs out.

  13. Spoken like a true artist. I only hope you get to enjoy your own words as much as we do. I'm sorry, that sounds weird, but you never cease to amaze me by how incredibly good you know how to express yourself.
If you have the time, please try to see Midnight in Paris. I'll get you tickets to the cinema where I work when you're in Amsterdam if you want! (Which is a place you should try to see anyway, it brings you right back to the 1920's and it's only a 7 minute canalwalk from De Duif). Anyway, see you on the 4th next month!

  14. Brian best luck on tour don't know if you actually read these but, last october you talked to me outside one afternoon before you played a show in gainsville. Anyway we were talking about when you first started touring with gaslight, and I just wanted to let you know if we hadn't talked I wouldn't be playing music again. Thanks for inspiring me again.

  17. Hi Brian,

I was wondering if you could sing "Tin Pan Alley", in Munich (on the 8th of October) for my sister Lauren.

It's her birthday on the 8th, and she really loves that song. We met in Barcelona in July 2011, and Lauren has met you on a few other occasions.

Thank you, I'm looking forward to the show !

Wish you the best of luck !

I did see the concert on tv and was blown away after the first sound!! fell badly love with "great expectation"!!!! still can't stop listening to it! love your voice!! I really, hope you and Ian will come back to Germany with the horrible crowes (and yes I know, that great expectation is not a song from the horrible crowes...;)). would love to here this amazing voice of yours live one day!!!

  20. This is a good common sense article. Very helpful to one who is just finding the resources about this part. It will certainly help educate me.

  21. I was reading this entry again after watching a bunch of Revival Tour clips on YouTube and I am terribly envious! I live in Manila (Philippines) and the chances of you guys coming here is close to nil, but I super hope you guys have something like the Revival Tour again one day, except in Asia! :)

AHHHHHHHHHH Elsie has helped me get through so much, thank you for the music!!!

  22. Really liked this post and can identify with the difficulty of having to pack up and leave all the time. I'm a military member, not a rock star (although I do bang on the keys sometimes and have been been in a few bands casually), but I know a lot of people in all different lines of work can relate. Anyway, I hope TGA or THC come to New Mexico sometime!

  24. Brian, jeez man what a gem of a dude you are. Well what a gem of an artist you are. I think the greats can make us listeners feel as if we're getting to know you with every new song. I appreciate the music you have given me and can't wait to get some more tunes. I found Gaslight through my friend and saw you wrote two songs with titles that I wanted to use before I heard about you guys, "I coulda been a contender", and "Here's lookin' at you kid". Both are awesome and thanks for stealin' my song titles.

From the bum with a one way ticket to palookaville,
