Radio Radio

Dear DJ... please do not put music on the internet that you know you're not supposed to.
For once can someone have the respect of an artist or band to let them release their creation in it's entirety when they deem it ready? I understand people are excited, but if I was waiting for a movie to come out, why would you want to download a chapter of the whole? You'll miss the point and you'll miss the intent of the whole. When a single is officially released, it's like a trailer... it's thought over, and it represents a mood or a sum of the parts... it's a statement.
If you respect us at all and our music, please don't download or listen to anything that's not official. Especially not when you take an MP3 stream, hook up coaxial cable and run it through a board and broadcast it. It sounds like garbage, and I know Myself, Ian, and Ted certainly didn't agonize over the sound of the record to have it played through a tin can telephone. The internet is great for somethings... but it's taking the magic out of music. There's no surprise and no mystery of art when people take it upon themselves to do things.

  1. i completely agree with what you say and I can see why you're angry at this guy. I know lots of people already listened to that song but if it helps I know just as much are going to buy that record and I'm one of them.

  2. I just hope people can resist.
Should be easy after reading this post.

  3. It's amazing how ignorant some people can be. I'm not sure how someone could have such a lack of respect for an artist, yet call themselves a DJ and a music-enthusiast. Something like this is just common sense, not to mention terribly irresponsible. I'll wait for the official release. I fully anticipate this album taking me along its journey several, several times.

  4. Heard the song without knowing the robbery that was committed. Truly sorry.

  5. I have no idea what happened honestly, but I agree with what you said! Well said!

  6. It's a tough balance to acheive. No one wants to be the bad guy and get heavy with people who pull this crap. You'll spend all your time chasing it and never making it. But no one wants anything they create to be lessened by disrespectful a-holes. Anyone who wants to pull a stunt like this isn't about the music. They're usually uncreative people trying to weave themselves into the fabric of something they can only avaricely admire.

  7. well said....but most people will continue downloading, movies, music etc.
As for myself I spent a lot of my money on cds or vinyl records...I got asked by a lot of friends and people why I am so stupid and pay money for records.....d'oh

In my opinion it seems sometimes like a personal philosophy nowadays....I am a winegrower myself , I run a small wine estate in germany and I am happy to spend good money for a good record as well as I would do for a good bottle of wine....both things are hand made piece of work and the money is the appreciation for the one who "produced" it and in order that he can continue his work .... But as a lot of people buy cheap wine in the supermarket , which is indeed most of time a shame to be called something like wine...people will continue in downloading and ripping music.....it is sad...but reality....

  11. I wouldn't dream of listening to this album at anything less than the quality of a CD.

An absolute must to be able to bring in all of the tones that these guys have worked so hard to put into it.

  12. If you're talking about what I think you're talking about, then the guy who played it is a big fan of the music and meant no disrespect. Anyone listening to that show on the radio could've already listened to your song on the interwebs and all that will end up happening is that more people will hear it and buy your record. I assume he played the song you streamed online so it was already available for folks to hear. But maybe someone else actually stole it and played it and I'm referring to something different.

  13. As fucked up as it is, ticket sales and positive reviews don't play a deciding role in the factors towards a record label's decision to pay for subsequent albums. If you want to hear a second Horrible Crowes record, follow Brian's advice.

The dude has NEVER led us wrong when it comes to musical suggestions.

  14. That goes for anything nowadays sweetheart, not just music. media and the internet, exploit so many original ideas, and art. Sorry your music was played without permission. your fans all are awaiting your album to hear it in its entirety, and the way you boys intended...hurry up already!! lol. teasing...

  15. Brian, I have the most profound respect for you, and I can assure you I will not listen to anything that is not officially released by you guys.

  16. I listened a week or so ago thinking that you all had released it. And not that anyone cares but the i'm not a big fan of the minute 30+ of the single leaked. Where are the guitars? I'm not gonna base my opinion off a minute and change sample of one song but I feel i'm listening to a top 40 pop song if you minus the lyrics. I still love you Fallon though. Met you briefly in Richmond 09 and you're a class guy.

  17. I admit it's tough not to go find this song as I am really excited for this record...but I'll refrain to respect the bands wishes...and is this takewarning guy serious? top 40? he needs to get out more

  18. Exactly what you said , you tailor a single to give a piece of the puzzle, just enough to intrigue and to mystify but not to much as for people to lose interest, when you do something as he did its like your ripping a page out of the back of the book and reading out of context. But just know that the the people that are your true fans and really respect you , won't listen to the track , and therefore will get your intended vision of the final product. Best of Luck on your New albumn, and September cant seem to come soon enough.

The Internet I think has also taking the fun out of searching for albumns and new music , you can't spend hours fliping through Vinyl at the record store , because they are a rare beast now , Im 16 and sadly never actually been in one. regardless once again best of luck , Gonna wear my fingers out learning all your new songs, and my voice with your new lyrics , gonna be good time, Have a nice summer Brian and crew.

  19. Clearly the DJ shouldn't have played the song. No issue there

I would like to take you up on two comments though, in all friendship.

    1) The trailer/movie analogy really only works for the first time you hear the album, as with any concept album especially. After that you can skip and shuffle all you like. In fact, that's where the movie analogy comes back in, because with DVDs too you can skip and just watch the scenes you like.

    2) As for agonising over the sound, here the analogy is arguably with an artist who finds their multi-media collage reproduced on a museum postcard. People will in any event play this record through cheap earphones, on crummy old car stereos, etc. Hardly anyone will hear it the way you, Ian and Ted did.

Lastly, given the importance of context, I wonder if this means that on the Horrible Crowes mini tour we will get all the songs in order. Would be neat, as many artists have of late played whole album shows.

  20. well said and totally respected....and as always, thank you for sharing your undeniable talent and passion with us.

  21. Stop your whining Brian, you make great music and true fans will buy the record. Music is to be shared and appreciated. As for the last show of Gaslight many California fans are turning their back on the band because we never got a proper tour. It seems the band decided to make two stops in California last year, and that was it. Don’t bother coming to Cali if all you do is bitch and moan. California is for true musicians and artist. The sun shines and the wave’s crash… something Jersey knows nothing about. Wake up and smell the Coke…

  22. I know I for one and pumped to hear this record but will def be waiting for the official release to get the full feel.

As for Chip's comment, stop your whinging. I love in New Zealand and have not even had the chance to see TGA so stop crying over 2 shows in Cali.

  23. Martin, ever heard of spell-check or the 5th grade? You certainly need it. I want to clarify that Gaslight never did a proper tour of American Slang, just wanted to hear some of those songs live. Sorry if anyone was offended by my comments, the 1st amendment is still alive, right? I can't wait to dance with Elsie. Cali forgives Gaslight:)

  24. Really, Chip? Bitter much? That was quite a silly thing to post on an artist's blog for no other reason than to act like a child. Thank you for representing that ever-present population of the Internet that does nothing but whine and then start spell check and grammar arguments. First amendment or not, you're an ass.

  26. Hey Brian, a couple of friends met you at FoW at maxwell's last week, I unfortunately was not one of them. (Was hanging out with Jody downstairs--he and i are bandmates in a different band out of JC) Anyway, I recently got turned on to you guys and am a fan of your songs. What'd you think of the show?

  27. Can I just say that there have been few trailers over the last couple of years (I'm a projectionist, I see them all!) that aren't remotely as good as the piece of music you are probably speaking of? Nonetheless, he shouldn't have done that.

And secondly, I rescheduled my flight out of New York so I can be at the Bowery Ballroom show :), but the ticketsite is not working! (I hope it has something to do with the fact I'm trying to get tickets from over here in Europe!) I'll keep trying tho'!

  28. For the record- I was listening to the radio show when Mary Ann was leaked. Crappy version or not, I haven't been able to stop singing it since. It was that leak that made me aware of The Horrible Crowes and has had me itching my skin waiting for September. That is until I cam across all the posts about the leak. I know the DJ meant no disrespect and probably didn't realize he wasn't suppose to play it. Maybe he should have found out for sure, but maybe he was just so goddamned excited to hear something so good. It is because of Ninebullets Radio that me, along with a lot of other people, have learned about such great artists as The Horrible Crowes and hearing such unkind words from people who have never even listened has taken the fire that Mary Ann put into my music world and dampen it out a little. bummer. Let's find the good in this- if it weren't for that leak, I never would have spent all my money on a plane ticket to LA on September 14th just so I can hear Mary Ann live...

  29. As an artist, myself, I can totally agree with you. I only let a select few people listen to my stuff because I don't want the public to hear it if I am not satisfied with it. It kind of an anxiety thing but its like a painter not unveiling their work until every detail is in place. Recently though I've started sending my work to this online mixing studio. They've helped me take my work to the...NEXT LEVEL. I mean mind blowing.
