What's up? This is what's up.

This is just a quick update on what's going on lately...

1. I'm gonna do JBTV with Brendan and Toby... look for that soon.

2. Setlists: We've been pulling out a lot of old songs we haven't done for a while,
we have some new covers coming up as well.
1930, High Lonesome, and Meet Me By The River's Edge are actually
in retirement from our sets right now. Just fair warning, if those are the three
songs you're coming to see, we're just letting you know we're not playing
them at all before you spend your money on a ticket. Pretty much everything
else is fair game for the sets on the rest of this year's tours.
I usually check the @briangaslight twitter before sound check everyday (3pm) to see
if there are any song requests for that night that we need to practice. Use that,
because yelling the whole show will never work.
3. Working on the "night time" music I spoke of last blog... I'll update that part very soon.

  3. Hello Brian!
    What new covers?
I hope that "nightime" music is your new demo songs ...
"Tin Pan Alley" or "The Blues, Mery" are among my favorite songs.

    Stay Lucky,
    Luca

  4. Today TGA play at The Showbox and you play an acoustic set at Easy Street Records, right?
I really hope for a pop up by EV...

  5. Hey Brian, I know you said the twitter account would get your attention, however I have absolutely no idea how to work that website so I am going to ask here. If you forget or don't get it i'll live but at the Milwaukee show if you could play "We Came to Dance" it would make the show for me. Also for a "cover request" I don't know if the whole band plays it but your cover of "Backstreets" on the Bruce website is absolutely incredible, it would be amazing to see it... Or "the weight" is my Pops favorite song and he's been going through a rough time.

    Thank you

  6. I would LOVE to hear "Trusty Chords" in Milwaukee... or you could try "the Revisionist" from the Lawrence Arms "Greatest Story Ever Told" that would be absolutely amazing.

Thank you for writing music. I have been looking, hard lately for new things to keep me going. New music. I keep coming back to Gaslight, the lawrence arms, hot water music and Lucero.

  7. I am excited for the JBTV deal.
I agree with Scott, a TLA cover would be amazing.

  8. Hey Brian!

I was really hoping for 1930 last time you were in Malmö, I'll keep waiting for that one. Any rumbleseat song together with chuch (or trusty chords obviously) would make the swedish winter a lot easier to get through. Or the weight, as mentioned above!

    Love Jens

  9. your solo songs are as great as the band songs - looking forward to the "nighttime music".

Have you guys ever attempted to cover a rap/hip-hop song? I think that would tremendously cool.

  10. As for the "nighttime music"...is this gonna sound something like Tom Waits's 'Heart of Saturday Night"?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Harley Ledbetter >> Very awesome, i hope. A mix between "...Saturday Night", "Small Change", the 2 solo album by Mike Ness and Bob Dylan.

  12. The version of Chamberlain's The South Has Spoiled Me that you guest in is one of my new favourite "night time" songs.

  13. Any particular reason those three are the three getting axed? Just tired of them?

    ReplyDelete
  14. How about covering Ramrod? Cant go wrong with that, or maybe Chocolate Jesus, it would be interesting to see how you and your band would interpret those tunes.

  15. Thats a shame man. Meet me by the rivers edge has been my favorite song for the past two and a half years or so. You should listen to (and cover)Altar Girl By The Weeks. Such sweetness.

  16. Brian, it would be amazing to see your record collection cataloged! Maybe at recordnerd.com or deadformat.net? :)

  21. I think they might be giving High Lonsome and River's Edge a rest because of the overt Springsteen references. Maybe giving these songs a break will help dissipate the facile and never-ending Bruce comparisons by the media.

If that's the case, I can understand where they're coming from. I just hope they don't let these soungs languish for too long.

  22. Dear Brian,

I'm just stopping by to say, good luck at the Radio City Music hall show in four days. You have worked hard to get there, and deserve every second of it. Thank you for all the music you write, and always Stay Free.

  23. Brian,

I just discovered this site. It is fantastic! I don't tweet, so this is a great forum to find out where you're headed musically. It's also nice to go back and read your previous comments about who/what has inspired your songwriting. We met briefly on stage, when you saw my request sign. Thanks for playing 'Spirit of Jazz'. It will always be a sentimental favorite of mine (now for two very different reasons). Thought you might be wondering why I chose to request that particular song.

The song lyrics inspired me to rethink the way I viewed my relationship with my husband. We've been together since I was 19, and he was 20. When you get together at such a young age, the trick becomes how to stay together as you grow up as individuals. You're not the same person at 39 that you were at 19. It's been a long hard road, with many twists and turns that come from starting a family, losing a parent, careers lost and found, and all that growing up you still have to do as you meet these challenges.

It'd be easy to say "you're not the same person, so I'm going to go find someone who's more like me now". However, the secret is to celebrate the things that brought you together in the first place. Also, nobody knows me like he does. He knows all my quirks and he's been there as I've grown through my growing pains. He's waited for me, when I fell behind(yeah, I love BS too)and I've done the same for him.

I get goosebumps every time I hear the lines,
"was I good to you the wife of my youth, not another soul could love you like my rotten bones do". Somebody else might come along and tell me how wonderful I am, but he's the one who stayed with me, while I was becoming the woman I am today.

In a era of instant relationships and seemingly endless break-ups, I think a song that celebrates long-term commitment is definitely worth the 8 hour drive!

My best to Hollie. Tell her thanks for the inspiration!

  25. Hey Brian,
I know this question segment is closed but I'm hoping at some point, you'll humor me.
First of all, I was at the show in Albany, NY. Thanks for coming to my home town! Amazing show...you were everything I imagined you'd be live. Really made my month.
Anyway, my question is: is there any significance behind the names Maria and Virginia. They are mentioned quite a few times. My friend and myself always talk about how we hope Virginia is your wife..the sweetest things are always said about her.
    Hope to hear from you!

  26. Hey Brian,

Hope you get this. Been to a few of your UK gigs this year and last time was at Reading. You haven't played anything from Sink Or Swim when i've been there, so was hopeful for when you play in Leeds on the 17th November you could play something from the album. We came to dance would go down a treat i'm sure.

    Thanks

    James

  27. Just wanted to say how much I loved your show in Atlanta. I was in the front row and I wanted to let you know that you showed me one of the best times of my life.

I was the guy yelling for a Bruce song, but after reading your blog and getting to understand you I realize how much of an @ss I was.

I got one of the setlists from the stage, my only regret is not getting it autographed, but I guess that gives me an extra reason to come see you guys live again.

Honestly, I know you are going to think I am just trying to flatter you, but I have been in the pit of Springsteen concerts, I've been front row with U2, and somewhere in the middle with Pearl Jam, and Ryan Adams, but your show was the best. Your connection with the crowd was just unbelievable and your passion for the songs was palpable.

Like I said before, one of the best nights in my life.

  28. Earlier this year, in July, I met you In the Mall of America. My name is Chad and I was also with my girlfriend Alyx.(We were the ones from Manitoba, CA that had drove down for the show) We talked about just little things like the mall and that you wanted to purchase a pair of shoes that day. In the midst of talking and being slightly nervous I forgot to thank you for your music. I thoroughly enjoyed the bands performance that night in Minneapolis, then once again I attended your concert In Winnipeg in early September. Not sure if you actually read these comments or not but just thank you for taking your time to talk to me that day in the mall and thank you for the music(It makes me think of the Fifties, not because of the 59' sound or anything like that. Just how you and the band write and perform this genuine honest music and are out there to enjoy life to the fullest. With that thought in mind it reminds me of my Grandma talking to me about the fifties, how dances, fairs and music brought people together in a way that is almost impossible nowadays. So the fact that you can evoke that thought in my mind is very important to me.) Take care and see you around Brian.

    -Chad

I know I already posted here and I am just hoping you will read this. I am a song writer and you inspired me to grow as one. I actually let someone at your label read them and he said that I had something special. I'd like to show you what I've got. I'm not asking you to put them on an album or anything, I'd just like to show you what you inspired.

If you could email me @ far2jones@yahoo.com I will send them to you. I know you are really busy, and I promise I won't email you back if you don't want me to, or I won't tell anyone your email if you do decide to email me. I'd just like for you to read them. I've been following you since when you were the Cincinnati Rail Ties and This Charming Man, and it would mean a lot to me if you would get back with me.

I know your label encouraged me to pick up a guitar and make my way to LA to audition or show them everything I've got, but my circumstances won't let me, and it is a major disappointment to know that I had a chance but nothing will really come from it.

Even if you don't and you never read this I want to say how much I appreciate your music and appreciate your connection with your fans and I can't forget to thank you for being an inspiration.

  36. Hey man. I was just told about this blog of yours by a friend. I really dig Gaslight, and while I'm not one of the crazy obsessives, I love the tunes. I'm a singer/songwriter from the Pacific Northwest, but currently studying music in Liverpool -- was actually going to see you guys in Manchester, but the tickets flew before I was able to look into getting them...

Anyway, just wanted to say, I keep a blog about my life as a music student, as an American in England, that sort of stuff. Please check it out if you get a chance (http://csvbauer.blogspot.com). And of course, the tunes on MySpace: http://myspace.com/christopherbauer. Cheers!

  37. Hi Brian,
I have a big favour to ask, and hopefully you don't think I'm too crazy!

I am looking to get a new tattoo- the plan is to get a branch filled with cherry blossoms running from my ankle across my foot. Along each side of the branch, I'm planning on having the lyrics "Stay hungry, stay free and do the best you can". This is a tattoo that I've been thinking about for awhile now, but recently a friend of mine passed away and it really made me decide that this tattoo and the way it represents the fragility of life is something I absolutely need to get done.

What I would greatly appreciate is if I can get you to write out just those 3 lines for me. I think having the lyrics tattooed in your handwriting would make the tattoo even more meaningful to me, as it would then incorporate the message I intend it to, but will also tie in my love for Gaslight and my appreciation for your lyrics.

Just throwing it out there if you would be able to do this for me. It would be much appreciated! :)
