So I'm on a mission to rid you of aweful music... so here's the good stuff....
Brendan Kelly fact sheet:
1. Is in the Lawrence Arms and The Falcon, and sometimes plays under his Christian name.
2. Is a better lyricist than you or I.
3. Has a great blog here:
This is the music that without, lots of bands wouldn't be here... Go buy the records and read the lyrics, sit down with them, in a quiet place where no one knows you've gone... have yourself a rest and listen to the songs and follow along with the words. Pretty profound. Life changing maybe... midwesterners... like the Replacements... I'd say the Larry Arms are one in the same to our generation. If you don't agree, I don't care, this is my blog and I'm right here. It's the only place I have such liberty. For you folk who haven't heard, or who've heard and looked over, do yourself a favor. Those guys are the finest... best punk rock band going. So go buy their records, go to their shows, put up with their nicknames, ignore that they spit when they talk.
Don't say I didn't tell you.
Hi Brendan.
Proof:
The Falcon - Unicorn Odyssey.
The Lawrence Arms - Boatless Booze Cruise Part One

Ahh the Falcon with Dan Andriano. I have had the pleasure of seeing the Lawrence Arms open for Alkaline Trio once upon a time. Great show. Alkaline is easily my favorite band. Dan is an amazing lyricist.
ReplyDeleteI once took on the very same fight; trying to rid the youth of the world of terrible music. Showing there's more than what's on the God awful radio. I grew up in a small town and watching the kids walk around in bondage pants and Slipknot t-shirts killed me. Hence the beginning of my bi-weekly music column in the paper. I'll never know if I was successful in getting some kids stoked on something good, but I hope I did.
Love this mission that you're on! :)
ReplyDeleteReally great suggestions so far, looking forward to reading more.
Brendan is the man. When he and Chris sing together, it's a beautiful thing. Way to give props.
ReplyDeleteI fully back everything you just wrote. It kills me to know that everything this guy has done isn't heralded as "genius".
ReplyDeleteI saw the great self-indulgence tour that TLA went on. Hours of Chris and Brendan being hilarious and awesome.... Not to mention getting my face rocked clean off by American Steel
ReplyDeleteBK: great dude, in a great band, with a great blog. Looking forward to reading yours now, too.
ReplyDeleteYou speak the truth!!
ReplyDeleteAwesome.
ReplyDeleteNice blog!
awesome!
ReplyDeleteAt the first time I saw the lawrence arms in 2004 in hanover in a small club...and it was a great gig!
ReplyDeleteAnd I really do remeber that they were spittin on me while singing...(by the way I can't remeber if I also spittin on them...)
But I was also spitten from the singer of the beatsteaks, and I think thats an indication for a great punk rock show :-))
i recently saw Lawrence Arms in Middlesbrough, UK. Brendan and the guys were just hanging out at the venue, having a couple of brews before they went onstage at what was a mini-festival. By the time they went on at about 9.30pm, a lot of people had left and there was probably only 100 people left in the room. one the most intimate (if you can say that about a punkrock band) gigs i've ever been to. fantastic guys, killer songs, provocative and clever lyrics, and possibly most importantly, an onstage persona which is probably ten times better than it should be! love 'em
ReplyDeleteThe Lawrence Arms 10th anniversary show is probably the best show/set I've ever seen. Played 30 songs, for nearly two hours and I was still pretty bummed when it was over.
ReplyDeletelove love love that you are doing this. I am kind of doing something similar, but with way less attention.
ReplyDeleteIm glad that you feel the same as i do Brian :) - Lawrence Arms are amazing!!
ReplyDeletebeen following him for a while now, glad to see you've got yourself a blog now, coco.
ReplyDeletePS. stop ignoring the north west
ReplyDeletei've often wondered what you thought about the larry arms, so i really enjoyed reading this
ReplyDeletenext your gunna tell me about chris and the larrys and sundowner?

Brendan just shared the story of why your nickname is coco the other day.
ReplyDeleteI had no clue you were in Lanemeyer, Brian. I can only hope that one day, Lanemeyer does another reunion and plays all of "If there's a will" and the Emanuel split. New Jersey is aching for the late 90's.
ReplyDeleteYou're also the first person I've followed in blogger! I'm batting a thousand! Please refer to my very accurate doodle about it by simply clicking in my name! The picture of you is spot on.
hahahahaha, "put up with their nicknames"
ReplyDeletei love brendan kelly. possibly even more than his wife and his mother combined.
ReplyDeleteAbsolute truth.
